Cool Vegan apps for iPhone and iPod Touch users

There are lots of apps for veggies who have the iPhone or iPod Touch! I'm vegan so I searched vegan and came up with really cool apps. I got the idea from the latest Veg News edition, they had an article on it. Vegan Steven is one which tells you where the vegan places are around you, Yum Yum is really cool, it's tons and tons of vegan recipes with pictures and instructions, Cruelty Free will give you all the cruelty free companies to shop from with links to the website, iVegetarian is another app to list veggie places near you. There is also a Find Green app, it lists green companies like the cruelty free app.

There are so many more though, check it out!

There are apps for shopping on Etsy too! These are paid apps however, Etsy Addict and Etsy Touch look cool. Don't forget to look up Daisy Wares on them!!

Do you have any cool apps you would like to share? Leave a comment and let us know about them!!

My new favorite vegan candle maker

I met Rachel and Ray in my Vegan Etsy group and really enjoy talking to them in the forums. I needed an all Lavender Essential Oil, Soy Wax Vegan Candle for relaxation purposes and I knew I could turn to their company Kenny Coop . Their tag line is Living Vegan Selling Vegan, how cool is that. I was finding a lot of candles with Lavender essential oil but it was always mixed with something else. I asked them if they could make an all Lavender candle and they were so nice to accommodate me. My candle arrived quickly, safely packaged. And to my surprise my company name (for all who don't know Daisy Wares is not my name but my business name) was all over the label. I loved it. I got a huge smile on my face and it made me feel special.

The awesome part was that the candle couldn't have arrived at a better time. Our power had gone out at noon that day and my husband had a little procedure done at the doctors office, so with no power and a sore hubby we lite the candle and relaxation hit immediately. It was heavenly.

It's great knowing that no animals were harmed or used for testing in the making of this candle and you can tell it was made from love.

An Angel in the sky

My friend saw the sun coming out and reflecting off this round building. Each reflection caused it's own prism of light in the sky. I kinda saw my own take on it.

Watch Your Mouth!

My good friend Silvana of Forest Nymphs sent this to me, it might help you decide what you want to put in your mouth....

Watch Your Mouth

Not what comes out but what goes in. Sure, you might follow the two-second rule when you drop your Tofutti Cutie on your kitchen floor, but you won’t want to give these disgusting hidden animal ingredients the time of day.

Casein—Whey’s cousin, casein is made from curdled milk. Yuck!

Gelatin—Rhymes with "skeleton." Coincidence? I think not. Gelatin is a protein made by boiling cows’ and pigs’ skin, tendons, ligaments, and bones. Jell-O? Heck, no!

Honey—Sure, honey tastes sweet, but you’ll get a bad taste in your mouth when you learn how it’s "harvested."From a former beekeeper: "[T]ypically, beekeepers are gloved and netted to avoid stings (nearly every bee who stings will die due to her entrails being pulled from her body attached to her stinger.) Then the hives are opened as quickly as possible and the bees are ‘smoked.’ Smoke from a smoldering fire carried in a ‘smoker’ is pumped into the hive and the bees are ‘calmed.’ In spite of this, the combs are pulled quickly and many bees are crushed in the process. When a bee is hurt, she releases a chemical message that alerts and activates the hive members who proceed to attack the intruder—giving their lives in the process."

Lard—Lard is such a gross word, it almost makes you wonder why they just don’t call it what it is: "Fat from hog abdomens."

Pepsin—If the thought of eating lard turns your stomach, stay away from pepsin, a clotting agent from pigs’ stomachs, used in some cheeses and vitamins.

Rennet—Certain words just make you cringe, like coagulate, congeal, clot—which is what rennet, an enzyme taken from baby calves’ stomachs, is used for in cheese production.

Stearic Acid—It may sound less gross than "lard," but stearic acid, which often rears its ugly head in chocolate and vitamins, comes from a fatty substance taken from slaughtered pigs’ stomachs—or from cows, sheep, or dogs and cats euthanized in animal shelters. Still want to chew on that piece of Fido?

Cetyl Palmitate—Check your head if you’re using margarine that contains cetyl palmitate, the fancy term for the waxy oil derived from sperm whales’ heads or from dolphins. "I can’t believe it’s not " oh, wait. It is" Whale head wax"?

Urea—Urea comes from urine and other "bodily fluids." It’s used to "brown" baked goods, like pretzels. Um, yeah. And the oven is for ??When going to any convenience store, take a look around and see what other food services they offer. Often, you can get made-to-order sandwiches and salads. For instance, Speedway gas stations can make up MTO veggie wraps and sandwiches, and you can also snag bagels, garlic fries (minus the cheese), and cheese-free nachos.

Vegan Candy Is Dandy!
Would you believe that some candies contain animal ingredients? It's true! Some candies are made from things like gelatin, which is mashed up cow skin, cartilage, and bones. And carmine, the red coloring used in some candies, is made from ground-up bugs. Can you believe that? Bugs! Blecch!Wondering if some of your favorite sweets are animal-friendly? Food For Thought?

I listened to a wonderful lecture this weekend about veganism and thought I would share some wisdom with you. Some of this was new to me and I've been veggie since 1984!

So for all the non-vegans out there who ask the question, "Well how do you get your calcium if you don't drink cows milk?" Here are some things to think about.

This is Sadie from Animal Place, such a sweetie

Calcium is a mineral that comes from the ground. Calcium comes from grass, the cow eats the grass and therefore the cow "gives" you milk with calcium.

Now I say "gives" you milk as if she wants to. In order to get milk from a cow, she has to be pregnant first. They will get these cows pregnant over and over and over again until her body just can't handle it anymore (same with pigs) When the little baby cow is born it is torn away from its mother. Cows do know that their baby they just gave birth too is being taken away and they will cry out in protest and so will the baby. It's so sad. If the newborn is a male, it is sent off to be turned into veal. If the newborn is female, it will endure many years of stress being shot up with hormones and having to give birth over and over again and each time their babies are taken away. And the females are eventually sent off to slaughter. But now I'm getting a little off subject here.

Most factory farmed cows are on lots with no grass, so how do you get your calcium? The farmers have to put the calcium in the cows food which came from the ground. Now isn't silly to have this huge production filled with suffering, pain, inhumane practices & greedy corporate factory farmers all for a mineral that is plant based, why do we have to go through an animal to get it? The cow is just the unnecessary middle "person" so someone can make a buck. The dairy industry is so huge that it can persuade the FDA to tell the public they need to drink cows milk to get their required daily intake of calcium. Do you think the dairy industry really cares about your health? Anywho, most dark leafy vegetables have a wealth of calcium like chard, broccoli & even nuts. And these all come from the ground and an animal didn't have to suffer for it.

Another question to ask is, "Why cows milk?" Why not puppy's milk, lions milk, hyena? And the interesting answer is because cows don't fight back. You want to try to get milk from a hyena? We take such advantage of these sweet natured animals. And why do we think it's gross to drink humans milk into adulthood? Why would milk from our very own species disgust us and yet we will drink it from an animal?

So right now I'm going to step down off my soap box and pour me a nice tall glass of Rice Milk and eat my chard, thank you very much.

Thank you Colleen Patrick-Goudreau for opening my eyes to some things I never knew!
